60s Dalston ‘ was just like the Caribbean ‘ says Pauline Brown. Growing up with the early influence of reggae, Pauline and friends’ spent their teenage years dressing up and trying to get in local clubs as, for her, reggae was more than just about getting into ‘the beat’ – it was also an education of, and connection to her roots. One of those clubs was the Four Aces on Dalston Lane, run by Newton Dunbar. The story of this club is central to revealing Jamaica’s influence on Dalston, and the rich musical legacy inherited from it.
